OVERVIEW

Goa holds a quieter, soulful side for those who wander beyond the beaches. Embrace slow travel by cycling through the lush countryside around Aldona village, exploring the historic, pastel-hued lanes of Fontainhas in Panjim, or finding serenity on the secluded sands of Galgibaga or Butterfly Beach. Uncover the state’s charm with a spice farm tour in Sahakari, a silent kayak trail through the mangroves of the Sal Backwaters, or a traditional meal in a family home in Assagao.

Getting to Goa

By Air: The most convenient option is to fly into Goa International Airport (GOI) , also known as Dabolim Airport (South Goa), or the newer Manohar International Airport (GOX) at Mopa (North Goa).

By Train: Goa has two major railway stations: Madgaon (South Goa) and Thivim (North Goa). Well-connected to the national rail network, these stations see regular trains from Mumbai (e.g., Konkan Kanya Express), Delhi, and Bengaluru. Madgaon is the more prominent hub, while Thivim is best for accessing North Goa’s beaches like Calangute and Baga.

By Bus: Goa is connected to the Western Ghats via national highways. Both state-run (MSRTC, KSRTC) and private luxury bus operators (e.g., Neeta, Paulo, VRL) run overnight Volvo and sleeper services from Mumbai, Pune, and Bengaluru. Buses typically stop at major drop-off points like Panaji, Mapusa, or Margao.

By Car: Consider taking the NH-66 along the coast. Trust Google Maps.

Best Time to Visit

Goa is an all-year-round destination to visit. But if beaches are a must then the best time to visit Goa is during the winters between November to March. Summers (April to May) are scorching and maybe impossible to explore all places.  June -September is monsoon – lush, fewer tourists with expected closure of beach shacks.

Local Food & Drinks in Goa

The most famous  dishes are Sorpotel, Vindaloo and Xacuti but many may not not know that Goan Saraswat thalis are a delight for seafood lovers!

  • Use app-based services (Goa Miles) or prepaid taxi booths; auto-rickshaws are less common but bargain firmly.
  • Carry portable fans.
