For a minute I couldn’t believe my eyes. But “truth is stranger than fiction”! A title that is unofficially bestowed upon those buildings, projects, monuments or even people that are deemed to come close to the league of the Seven Wonders of the World, Angkor Wat of Cambodia surpassed Pompeii of Italy to earn this prestigious title of “The 8th Wonder of the World”!

About Angkor Wat

Spanning over 402 acres of temple complex, this is considered as the largest religious structure in the world in the Guinness Book of World Records and marks the brilliance of Khmer architecture.

Built in the 12th century by King Suryavarman II, it was dedicated to Lord Vishnu but eventually converted into a Buddhist sanctuary. It stands witness to the transition of temple reflecting Hinduism to one nurturing Buddhism.

Detailed with bas reliefs wherein 2D sculpting translates to a 3D visual experience, these depict scenes not only from the Hindu epics of Mahabharata and Ramayana but also daily life of Khmer people.

As per Hindu mythology, the dwelling place of the gods is considered to be Mount Meru which is symbolized in the vast complex of Angkor Wat by five central towers.

How to Reach Angkor Wat?

Head to Siam Reap by flight ->take a minibus tour or book a cab/taxi/Tuk-Tuk to reach Angkor Wat. You can even rent a cycle and head to the UNESCO site.

Best Time to Visit

The dry season which prevails from November to May is the best time to visit this archeological marvel. But be prepared to encounter a crowd.

Wet season between May to October should be avoided.

Things to Remember

• This is a funerary temple complex so dress appropriately. Women should cover their knees with a skirt or long dresses. Usually, they have provisions of renting sarongs which can be wrapped around the waist. It is preferable for men to wear trousers.

• Do not touch the temples.

• Do not remove stones or vandalize in any way.

• Respect the monks.

• Respect the “No entry” signs and avoid sneaking in.

• Do not litter.

• No not indulge in smoking.

• Carry a bottle of water, towels and sunscreen.

• Please follow all the dos and don’ts that are mentioned at the site.
