I am sure you haven’t heard of these sites (I have heard of only 1!). This September the World Heritage committee will convene and decide on the potential sites that would be added to the list of protected sites. Exciting, isn’t it!! You all might want to know because once those are added to the list then it will start attracting the crowd.
Without further ado here’s the list of potential sites:
1. Gaya Tumuli Burial Grounds – South Korea
Located in the southern coast of the Korean Peninsula of Gaya in the Nakdong River Basin, the Gaya Tumuli Burial Grounds is nestled in the heart of South Korea’s Gyeongsangnam-do province and offers a unique window into the ancient Gaya Confederacy’s burial practices.

During the temperate months of spring (April to June) and autumn (September to November) offer picturesque landscapes, with cherry blossoms in full bloom during spring and vibrant foliage in autumn.
How to Reach:
By Air: The nearest major airport is Gimhae International Airport in Busan. From the airport, you can take a domestic flight to the nearby Gimhae Airport. Once you land at Gimhae Airport, you can reach the burial grounds by taxi or bus.
By Train: South Korea’s extensive train system connects major cities to Gimhae. From Gimhae, you can take a short taxi or bus ride to the Gaya Tumuli Burial Grounds.
By Bus: Intercity buses run regularly between major cities like Busan and Seoul to Gimhae. From Gimhae Bus Terminal, you can easily reach the site by taxi or local bus.

2. Cultural Pot of Djerba – Tunisia

The best time to visit Takalik Abaj Ruins is during the dry season, which typically spans from November to April.
However, if you prefer a quieter experience with fewer tourists, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons of May to June and September to October.
How to Reach:
By Flight: The nearest major airport to Takalik Abaj is the Retalhuleu Airport (Aeropuerto de Retalhuleu), which offers limited domestic flights.
You can also fly into Guatemala City’s La Aurora International Airport and then take a domestic flight to Retalhuleu or drive to the ruins.
By Road: If you’re exploring Guatemala by car, you can drive to Takalik Abaj from various cities. It’s approximately a 4-hour drive from Guatemala City and a 2-hour drive from Quetzaltenango. Be sure to have a reliable GPS or map, as some of the roads may be less traveled.
Public Transportation: Buses and microbuses connect major cities to Retalhuleu. From Retalhuleu, you can hire a taxi or take a local bus to the ruins.

7. Bale Mountains National Park – Ethiopia

The best time to visit Rwanda’s 1994 Genocide Memorials is during the dry season, which typically spans from mid-May to mid-October. Keep in mind that Rwanda is in the southern hemisphere, so the dry season corresponds to their winter months.
How to Reach:
Rwanda is well-connected internationally, with the Kigali International Airport (KGL) serving as the main entry point. Once in Kigali, you can access most of the genocide memorials by road. Some of the prominent genocide memorial sites include:
Kigali Genocide Memorial: Located in the capital city of Kigali, this memorial is easily accessible and is often the starting point for visitors.
Murambi Genocide Memorial: Situated in the southern province, this memorial can be reached by road from Kigali in approximately three to four hours.
Nyamata Genocide Memorial: Also located in the southern province, Nyamata is around two hours away from Kigali.
Ntarama Genocide Memorial: Like Nyamata, Ntarama is also in the southern province and can be reached in about two hours from the capital.
Gisozi Genocide Memorial: Located in Kigali, it’s part of the Kigali Genocide Memorial and is easily accessible within the city.

As of my last knowledge update in September 2021, many of the 1994 Genocide Memorials in Rwanda did not charge an entry fee. However, it’s essential to verify this information as policies can change over time. Additionally, some memorials might request a voluntary donation to support their maintenance and educational programs.

10. Mysterious Megalithic Monuments of Minorca – Spain

From the airport, you can easily reach the megalithic sites by renting a car or utilizing the island’s public transportation system, which includes buses that connect major towns and attractions. Taxis are also readily available.

The majority of megalithic sites on Minorca are open to the public free of charge.
However, some privately owned sites may require a small entrance fee.

The opening hours of the megalithic monuments can vary depending on the site and the time of year. Generally, they are open during daylight hours, with longer opening hours during the peak tourist season.

11. The Limestone of Anticosti Island – Canada
Nestled in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, off the eastern coast of Canada, Anticosti Island beckons travelers with its breathtaking landscapes and captivating geological formations. Anticosti Island welcomes visitors year-round, but during the winter months when some services may be limited.
Generally, during the summer and fall months, the island is more accessible and offers a wider range of activities and services.
Monuments of historical events have been vandalized through ages and is still being subjected to it infrequently. Considering the atrocities meted towards these national treasures, including all of them in the list of protected sites is the only way to protect these treasures of the past. But the decision lies with the officials of course!
